CHAPTER 9

Rose

It’s late.

The dipping sun is turning the walls amber when I’m roused from my orgasm-induced daze by the incessant buzzing of someone’s phone.

“Arlan…I thought we agreed to keep that shit on do not disturb,” Finn grumbles from beneath me, where I’m draped over his chest. He swats at the man on my right.

“I only let it pass through Robert—”

“Our operations manager,” Matthew explains from my left with a disappointed shake of his head.

“—and only if he calls more than once in five minutes. It must be an emergency.” Arlan kisses my shoulder, letting his teeth drag over one of the many marks he’s left on my skin, before rolling from bed. He steps into his jeans and draws them up in one swift motion, leaving them unbuttoned.

I temporarily lose focus as I imagine licking the light trail of hair that disappears between that denim vee.

“There’s always some fire to put out.” I haven’t known them long, but I’d bet Finn isn’t usually this grumpy. The laugh lines around his eyes and mouth have to fight to bend downward.

Even Matthew seems annoyed. “You disturbed Rose and she needed to rest.”

“I’m okay. You’ve already refreshed me.” I pat his chest, though it doesn’t seem to calm him any.

I glance from him to Finn to Arlan then back to Matthew.

There’s a whole lot of tension stretching between them.

I like it much better when it’s the sexual sort.

“I’ll take this outside. And be right back.” Arlan hesitates, gauging his partners’ reactions. When he’s met with resigned stares, he stabs his fingers into his hair, curses, and turns his back. The muscles there bunch so the white zigzag across them stands out even more. His tone is nearly as cold as the one he used on the men who’d stalked me when he barks into the phone, “Something better be burning the fuck down. What is it?”

He steps out into the hallway.

I clear my throat. “Are you two anti-technology or what?”

To erase any hint of judgment, I cuddle between Finn and Matthew, hugging them both.

They’re world-class snugglers.

“Nah.” Finn scrubs his hand over his face, erasing some of the tautness there. He sits up, leaning against the headboard and tugging me so that I curl up against his chest once again. “It’s more like we’re anti Arlan giving himself a heart attack before we’re fifty over some dumb shit he doesn’t need to care so much about.”

Matthew adjusts, laying his head in my lap so he can peer up at us both. “It’s exhausting being with someone who doesn’t know how to lose. Who insists on being the best at every damn thing they do. Sometimes second place is good enough. We need to rest. A break. Even just a short one so we can reconnect. So I…convinced…him to chill out for this week. Just seven short days to actually relax, you know?”

The smoke in his voice makes me pretty sure about what he used to entice Arlan to suspend his workaholic nature.

There’s more to this, though.
